Personally, I don't view this as an issue of democracy and China isn't ready for a democracy: I suspect that a Far Right (or Left) dictator would be elected by the majority, something that is not in the best interests of China, Chinese or even the West. You have to live here to understand this. But as someone who strongly believes in justice (and as a Christian who believes in peace and justice as the major tenets of Christian works), well, this is a different issue. The problem in China is that many cities, provinces and regions are out of control. The central government is doing an admirable job overall, but this place is a mess with way too many conflicting interests. I applaud Hu Jintao and especially Wen Jiabao, but the issues that they're tackling -- from Darfur to the domestic environmental crisis to income disparity to soft diplomacy to ... -- are quite a challenge, perhaps greater than the challenges faced by any major power. Unfortunately, the inevitable result: YouTube will be blocked and this could also mean (more) trouble for Google in China. But this doesn't necessarily mean that the central government won't take actions against the perpetrators. They might; matter of fact, they probably will. The reality is that unless issues are brought to their attention, they're not addressed. They already have a lot on their plate. Very touching; I was deeply moved.
