virtual worlds in china, association

I’m interested in virtuality, experience, and culture; Zafka Zhang is a metaverse researcher, blogger, and evangelist, directs research at China’s virtual world HiPiHi, and according to his Twitterstream, recently started his own youth insights and marketing company, China Youthology青年志; Li Feng is an Instructional Technology Specialist at University of Massachusetts Lowell and Second Lifer.  Along with about 20 others, we’re all members (thanks Zafka) of the Association of Virtual Worlds’ Virtual Worlds in China group. It’s new, we’ll see. Join?

  1. 1 Quote from Beijing Virtual World

The China Recreation District based in West Beijing is a goverment sponsored project to create a virtual economy providing infrastructure and platforms through which any internet business can promote and sell their real-world products and services. The 80-square-kilometer complex is huge, allowing for whatever physical needs the CRD may have including data centers, entrepreneurship centers, training facilities, a real-world amusement park, a game center and conferance facilities.
Operating under the brandname of “DOTMAN” and branching out into six virtual spaces:
DOTLIFE - provides 3D models and databases for individuals and companies in the world
DOTBANK - banking and transaction services
    DOTMEDIA - communications services
DOTSPACE - content pooling, trading platforms, and libraries for 3D models, animations, films, games, and other digital content
    DOTGAME - online games
DOTBASE - Internet-related services from customer service to bandwidth

hi, Lyn, glad to catch up with you via Twitter. I am co-founding Youthology with my wife Lisa Li. I am still working in HiPiHi and hanging in the virtual worlds. Welcome to have a look at our blog http://chinayouthology.com/blog/ Youthology has just been started. It employs anthropological approach in youth research, and we hope to meet you next time when you are in Beijing.
